Jays' Francisco Liriano taken to hospital after getting hit by line drive

vendredi 7 octobre 2016

Toronto left-hander Francisco Liriano was hospitalized as a precaution after taking a line drive near the back of his head in the Blue Jays' 5-3 win over Texas on Friday in Game 2 of the AL Division Series.

Liriano turned away from the hit by Carlos Gomez with one out in the eighth inning, and the ball ricocheted into right centre off the back of his neck near his head. The hit was measured at 102 mph, and Gomez winced as he headed to first on the run-scoring single.

The 32-year-old stayed on his feet and walked around the infield briefly before his teammates, a trainer and manager John Gibbons came out to check on him. Liriano was replaced by closer Robert Osuna, who pitched for the first time since leaving the AL wild-card game three days earlier with shoulder discomfort.

Liriano stayed in the dugout briefly before going to the Toronto clubhouse. Gibbons said he wasn't sure precisely where the ball struck Liriano.

"He's just going for further tests," Gibbons said. "Anytime you get a head injury, you got to get it looked at. So that's about the extent of it right now."

Gomez also wasn't sure where the ball hit Liriano.

"It's tough to see that, but it's part of the game," Gomez said. "Just wait for the good news that he's OK."

Travis to receive MRI

Second baseman Devon Travis was scratched from the Game 2 starting lineup because of a sore right knee.

Travis will have an MRI on Saturday.

If Travis is unable to continue in the series, the Jays have a few options.

They can keep Travis on the active roster, which will keep him to eligible for the ALCS should they advance.

If the team puts him on the disabled list in order to add an infielder to the roster for the rest of the ALDS, Travis would be allowed to return for the World Series, but would have to miss the ALCS.

Osuna pitches in Game 2

Osuna came in after Liriano was hit and closed out Game 2 with a 5-out save.

The 21-year-old right-hander had been in question since leaving the 10th inning of Toronto's 5-2 win over Baltimore on Tuesday. Osuna complained of a slight "stretch" in his shoulder.

His performance on Friday put to rest any concern Osuna was dealing with a major injury.

His fastball was in the mid-to-high 90s, and while he gave up a ninth-inning leadoff double, he recorded two strikeouts in the 31-pitch outing.
