Braden Holtby's Tragically Hip mask helps Gord Downie's charities

A pair of Gord Downie charities got an assist from an NHL star.

The mask worn by Capitals goalie Braden Holtby at the World Cup of Hockey netted more than $27,000 in an auction to benefit the Gord Downie Fund for Brain Cancer Research and the Gord Downie Secret Path Fund for Truth and Reconciliation.

Downie, the frontman for the iconic Canadian band The Tragically Hip, announced earlier this year that he's suffering from an incurable form of brain cancer.

Holtby, the reigning Vezina Trophy winner, had his World Cup mask decked out with Canada's logo and some Hip imagery to honour one of his favourite bands.

The tribute was a natural fit as Holtby says he grew up with the Tragically Hip and their hockey-themed songs.

"I am very proud to have been a part of supporting these two important funds in Mr. Downie's honour," Holtby said in a release, "And I appreciate everyone's help in making this auction a success."
