Penny Oleksiak lowers her Canadian 100m freestyle record

mercredi 7 décembre 2016

Swimmer Penny Oleksiak carried her dominance in the 100-metre freestyle from Rio de Janeiro to Windsor, Ont., on Wednesday, shattering her own Canadian record in winning her heat race in 52.36 seconds.

The 16-year-old from Toronto used her speed and six-foot-one frame to defeat Australia's Brittany Elmslie (52.72) by nearly a half-second at the FINA world short-course championships.

Ranomi Kromowidjojo of the Netherlands stopped the clock in 52.75 to finish third.

In August, Oleksiak clocked 52.70 to tie Simone Manuel of the United States at the wall for an Olympic record and Canada's first-ever women's medal in the 100 free.

Oleksiak went on to become the first Canadian to win four medals at a single Summer Olympic Games, collecting silver in the 100 butterfly and bronze medals in the 4x100 and 4x200 free relays.

She was also the youngest gold-medal winner at the Olympics, beating 17-year-old George Genereux, who won the shooting title at Helsinki in 1952.

Oleksiak also joined Kylie Masse, Kelsey Wog and Michelle Williams Wednesday morning to set a national mark in the 4x50 medley relay.

On Tuesday night, Oleksiak was part of the 4x100 free relay team that was disqualified moments after what it believed was a silver medal performance.

Coaches instructed Canadians Sandrine Mainville, Alexia Zevnik, Michelle Williams and Oleksiak to swim in one order and then a Swimming Canada official handed in a different order to meet officials, thus an instant disqualification.

Earlier Tuesday, 16-year-old Taylor Ruck of Kelowna, B.C., raced to bronze in the 200 free.

CBCSports.ca is live streaming the event from Tuesday through Sunday, with the morning heats going at 9:30 a.m. ET, and the semifinals and finals at 6:30 p.m. ET.
