Olympic sports roundup: Mark McMorris is back in a big (air) way

lundi 14 novembre 2016

It was a jam-packed weekend of high-performance sport around the world, with many Canadian athletes in action, including the return of snowboard icon Mark McMorris.

Here's a look at what you may have missed.

McMorris returns

It was a triumphant return to action for McMorris. After breaking his femur last season, the Regina native got back on the horse at a big air even in Milan.

McMorris used that jump to help him to a third-place finish at the event, which saw Norway's Marcus Kleveland take gold and Belgium's Seppe Smits earn silver.

On the skiing side of the event, Teal Harle of Campbell River, B.C., finished fifth.

Blondin blazes to gold

Canadian speed skater Ivanie Blondin needed a bit more space in her carry-on after capturing two medals at the first long track World Cup event of the season.

The Ottawa native scored her first-ever medal in the 3,000-metre distance with a bronze, then sprinted to a gold in the mass start on Sunday in Harbin, China.

Gilles, Poirier claw their way on to podium

The fourth Grand Prix of Figure Skating event of the season took place in Paris this past weekend, and Paul Poirier and Piper Gilles needed a big free skate to have a shot at landing on the podium.

As you can see, the ice dance duo did just that, scoring a bronze medal with a flawless free program.
