Canada's Eric Gillis finished fourth at the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon on Sunday.
The 36-year-old from Antigonish, N.S., crossed in two hours, 13 minutes and 40 seconds.
Gillis was gunning for Jerome Drayton's 41-year-old Canadian record of 2:10.09.
Kenya's Philemon Rono was first in an unofficial time of 2:08:30.
In his sixth appearance in the race, Gillis was on record pace through about two thirds of the race, but fell back over the final 12 kilometres, which he ran alone.
Gillis was 10th at the Rio Olympics eight weeks ago.
That was Canada's best finish since Drayton was sixth in 1976 in Montreal.
