Andre De Grasse and Usain Bolt advanced to the 200-m final.

De Grasse gained ground on Bolt in the final metres of the 200, but the Jamaican simply smiled and wagged his finger at the 21-year-old as he crossed the finish line first.

In the women's 200, Elaine Thompson solidified her role as Jamaica's new sprint force after winning the gold just days after finishing first in the 100-metre. Her win on Wednesday dethroned world champion Dafne Schippers from the Netherlands. That's Schippers, who won silver, on the track.

Damian Warner 3rd in the decathlon on day 1.

In the decathlon, Canadian Damian Warner came out of the blocks strong on the first day of competition by setting an Olympic-best time of 10.30 seconds in the 100-metre, besting American Ashton Eaton in the sprint. Eaton came back to win the 400-metre and long jump events and leads the competition heading into Day 2  by a comfortable margin.  That's him with the mask.

Yeats' tournament was kept alive when Japan's Sara Dosho — who beat her in an earlier round — made the gold medal match, allowing the Canadian to fight again. She won her repechage bout for a ticket to the bronze medal match but will leave Rio in fourth. The third-ranked female golfer in the world fired an eagle on the fifth hole in a round that included four birdies, but a pair of double-bogeys set her back in her tournament opener Wednesday. This is Russia's Maria Verchenova on the fourth tee.
