Canada's won a 'freaking historic' bronze medal in women's rugby 7s.

Kelly Russell (above) and the Canadian women's rugby sevens team beat Great Britain 33-10 to win the bronze medal on Monday at the Rio Olympics. Captain Jen Kish called the win — Canada's first ever Olympic rugby medal — a "freaking historic moment" sure to raise the profile of the sport at home.

Many on Twitter posting under the hashtag #rugbysevens agreed, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (although not quite in those words).

Swimmer Kylie Masse surprised the field, and herself.

In a moment that will look like déjà vu for anyone who watched Penny Oleksiak swim to a silver medal the day before, Masse reacted with a look of surprise in the pool. She won Canada's fourth medal of the Rio Olympics after touching the wall at exactly the same time as China's Fu Yuanhui with a time of 58.76 seconds in the 100-metre backstroke.

British synchronized divers celebrated with a dunk.

Bronze medalists Daniel Goodfellow and Tom Daley looked the part on the podium during the medal ceremony for the men's synchronised 10-metre platform diving final on Monday. Earlier, they celebrated their medal win by jumping back into the pool.

Michael Phelps continued his drive to amass medals in Rio.

A day after winning his 19th Olympic medal, U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps hit the pool in the 200-metre butterfly qualifiers Monday morning. (He went on to qualify for the final, which is scheduled for Tuesday at 9:28 p.m. ET.)

Here's where things get blurry.

Photographers covering the Olympic Games sometimes like the slow things down. Here, two Ukrainian divers appear as streaks in this image from the men's synchronised platform diving final.

The same technique captured heavyweight boxers Clemente Russo of Italy and Tunisian Hassen Chaktami exchanging blows and Marshall Islander Mathlynn Sasser in the women's 58-kilogram weightlifting contest.

The Olympic sailing competition got underway.

The first of the sailing events took to the waters of Marina da Gloria with the RS-X and laser fleet races on Monday.

Monday was a tough day on the equestrian course.

Canada's Kathryn Robinson, riding Let It Bee, was eliminated from an individual cross-country event on Monday that saw several dangerous-looking wipeouts.

A day earlier, a bullet pierced the roof of the media tent at the Olympic Equestrian Centre sometime during lunch.

Meanwhile, back at the rugby venue…

Volunteer manager Marjorie Enya proposed to her girlfriend Isadora Cerullo, a player on the Brazilian side, after Australia's historic gold medal win over New Zealand on Monday. Cerullo said yes.
