Auston Matthews scores 1st 2 goals of his career

mercredi 12 octobre 2016

It only took eight minutes and 21 seconds for Auston Matthews to enter the history books. And only about six more minutes after that to enter them again.

The Toronto Maple Leafs' first overall pick scored the first goal of the NHL season — the league's 100th anniversary — putting it behind Senators goaltender Craig Anderson on his first shot and third shift.

He then scored his second goal on a spectacular individual effort about six minutes later — on his second shot — where he stole the pick Mark Stone, avoided a hit from Mark Hoffman and got around Erik Karlsson to score from a bad angle.

Matthews became the 12th first-overall pick to score his first career goal in his first career game, and joins Alex Ovechkin as the only No. 1 pick to score twice in his first game. Except Matthews did Ovechkin one better, scoring both goals in the first period, becoming the first player ever to achieve that feat.

The last top pick to score in his NHL debut was Ryan Nugent-Hopkins of the Edmonton Oilers, who did it in 2011.

The first goal was assisted by Zach Hyman and William Nylander.

His parents, who are on hand at the Canadian Tire Centre to cheer on their son in his debut, couldn't be happier after he scored his first goal.
