Alena Sharp tops Canadians, Brooke Henderson expected to make cut at Manulife LPGA Classic

Marina Alex put an exclamation mark on her second round at the LPGA Manulife Classic in Cambridge, Ont.

Alex was the clubhouse leader after firing a tournament-best 8-under 64 on Friday morning, making eagle on her final hole of the day to top the leaderboard at 10-under.

"This I think is the lowest I've shot out on the LPGA," said a smiling Alex after leaving the scorer's tent at hole No. 9.

Alex sits two shots clear of South Korea's Mi Hyang Li (67), who was in sole possession of second at 8-under. The first round was marred by strong winds, but Li said calmer conditions made the second round at Whistle Bear Golf Club easier.

"Less wind, and the greens are in better condition," said Li. "So just everything is a perfect game. I missed a short putt last hole, but that's just one miss."

Hamilton's Alena Sharp (70) remains the low Canadian at 5-under for the tournament.

Maude-Aimee Leblanc (71) of Sherbrooke, Que., is 4-under, while Anne Catherine Tanguay (71) of Quebec City and Olympian Brooke Henderson (71) of Smiths Falls, Ont., are 3-under and are expected to make the projected cut.

"It's always good for Canadians to make the cut," said Sharp. "Not really thinking about being low Canadian. I want to do well, be in contention for the weekend, so I feel like I did a good job the last couple of days, and it's tough in the wind. So I was happy with how I hit it."

Amateur Maddie Szeryk (72) of London, Ont., and Calgary's Jennifer Ha (74) both finished at 1-over par. Amateur Josee Doyon (74) of St. Georges-de-Beauce, Que., was 2 over.
