The World Cup of Hockey is down to its final two days of group-stage play, and half of the four semifinal berths are still up for grabs, along with the top spot in both groups.
Group A is taking shape, with Canada and Europe, both 2-0-0, already securing spots in the elimination round. First place will be decided by tonight's matchup between the two teams. The Czech Republic (0-1-1) and the U.S. (0-2-0) have been eliminated from playoff contention.
Group B, meanwhile, remains very much in flux, with all four teams still in the hunt for the two available semifinal spots heading into this afternoon's game between Sweden (2-0-0) and North America (1-1-0).
Here are the full implications of Wednesday's action in Toronto:
Group A
- The winner of the Team Europe vs. Team Canada game (8 p.m. ET) will clinch first place in Group A and meet the Group B runner-up in the semifinals on Saturday night.
- The loser of the Team Europe vs. Team Canada game will finish as the runner-up in Group A and meet the Group B winner in the semifinals on Sunday afternoon.
Group B
- Team Sweden will clinch a spot in the semifinals, as well as first place in Group B, if it earns at least one point in its game against Team North America (3 p.m. ET).
- Team North America will clinch a spot in the semifinals if it defeats Team Sweden in regulation.
- Team North America will be eliminated from semifinal contention if it loses to Team Sweden by five or more goals.
- Team Finland will be eliminated from semifinal contention if Team North America earns at least one point against Team Sweden.
