A woman is reportedly suing Toronto Blue Jays slugger Edwin Encarnacion for battery after allegations surfaced claiming the baseball player knowingly gave her sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), according to TMZ sports.
The woman claims to be a 24-year-old family friend of Encarnacion, 33, and is seeking $11.5 million US in damages.
According to the reports, the woman claims she had unprotected sex with Encarnacion at least twice during a trip to the Dominican Republic in February.
After going to the doctor complaining about pain, she thought may have contracted Zika just a few days after her encounter with Encarnacion, the reports say. They added that the woman said she was diagnosed with two STDs, claiming to have been tested just a few months earlier after being intimate another Blue Jay, but the tests were negative.
Encarnacion's agent, Paul Kinzer, told Fox Sports in a statement that his client intends to fight back against the lawsuit.
"He will take every legal measure to defend himself against this frivolous claim and will bring appropriate claims in the appropriate forums against all of the individuals seeking to exploit his financial position," Kinzer said.
"Mr. Encarnacion will not be commenting on this matter. He will not allow this to distract from his continued focus of contributing to his team's success," Kinzer continued. "We kindly ask that his privacy be requested."
The woman alleges she contacted Encarnacion, who insisted he was clean, and suggested "she may have picked up [the STDs] when they went 4-wheeling and she swam in the river."
Encarnacion later backed off his statements of being clean, according to the woman, and ended any contact with her shortly thereafter. Encarnacion is accused of knowing he was carrying the diseases at the time of their encounter.
The Blue Jays, currently tied for first in the MLB's East Division, have not commented on the allegations.
