Olympic sensation Penny Oleksiak won the Lou Marsh Award on Tuesday, beating out NHL star and two-time winner Sidney Crosby and breakout sprinter Andre De Grasse for the award.
The 16-year-old Toronto native won four medals, including one gold, at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in August while shattering several Canadian records along the way. She followed that performance by winning four medals at the short-course world championships in Windsor, Ont., last week.
Oleksiak is the eighth swimmer to win the award and the first since 1992 when Mark Tewksbury won on the strength of his performance at the Summer Games in Barcelona.
She also supplants fellow swimmer Elaine Tanner as the youngest winner of the award; Tanner was 17 when she won in 1966 after claiming four golds and three silvers at the Commonwealth Games.
The Lou Marsh Trophy is handed out annually to Canada's best athlete by a panel of journalists. The award is named for Lou Marsh, a former athlete, referee and sports editor of the Toronto Star.
